Hackney Estates Recycling Stores Refurbishment

Ammcass CE Group were commissioned to deliver Phase 5 of Hackney Council’s waste and recycling improvement programme, working across eight estate sites in the borough. The project involved the closure of existing waste chutes and hoppers and the construction of new, higher-capacity facilities to accommodate both waste and recycling bins. This included the installation of external bin store enclosures incorporating permeable paving solutions, supporting sustainable drainage and improved estate environments.

The new bin store facilities comprised a combination of decorative steel panel enclosures fixed to new foundations and existing surfaces, as well as standalone bin unit enclosures installed in multiple configurations. The works required minor groundworks to form shallow foundations and paving, alongside agricultural land assessments and asbestos surveys, with removals undertaken where necessary. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Local Planning Authority to ensure all designs met planning requirements while maintaining and enhancing the quality and integrity of the scheme.

Supporting the North London Waste Authority’s target of achieving a 50% recycling rate by 2025 was a key driver for this programme. With 51 residential blocks affected, we adopted a considerate construction approach to minimise disruption, maintaining clear communication with residents and actively incorporating their feedback into our construction management plans. Building on our successful delivery of Phase 4 of the programme, we continued to work collaboratively with Hackney Council through weekly progress meetings, ensuring the project was completed within the agreed budget and timeframe while delivering long-term improvements to waste and recycling facilities across the borough.
